Struggling Old Friends
In 1998 I retired - and I was able to get by with a little help from my son and daughter in law. Then, last year, they were both made redundant. They no longer receive any unemployment benefits and we are in a desperate situation. We are very dependent on the help of Meals on Wheels. The kitchen is near our home and we often volunteer our services. It is very rewarding helping in this way. It is also very sad to see how many other families are struggling as we are.
The twilight years. A time that, in an ideal world, should be spent surrounded by loved ones. A time that should be filled with reminiscences, delicious lunches and easy afternoons. A time that – in many people’s lives – is the first they’ve had to put their feet up, after a lifetime of work, stress and trying, against all odds, to be the best they can be.
